Have a current one.. always keep your resume up to date.
There is no excuse for this. Employers are always looking for new employees that keep on top of things.
Even if you aren't looking, they may be looking for you.
Would you want to be skipped over for that higher paying job because your resume is out of date? |
|

Always keep your contact information up to date.
Someone may have liked your resume and might not be able to contact you if it is outdated. |
|
| 3 |
Never exaggerate your experience. This is not only unprofessional, it could potentially give your new employer a reason to terminate you. |
|
| 4 |
Race, religious, political, or personal beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status etc should all be omitted.
Employers are not allowed to consider this information in regards to employment decisions. |
|
| 5 |
Omit personal references. Place a statement that you can furnish them on request. This will prevent unnecessary communication
with the references. |
|
| 6 |
Formatting is very important. Can employers scan your resume and see the employers quickly? Can they find each section without
having to search? Make each section heading bold and underlined in a larger font. Make each employer bold. Spacing above and/or
below each element helps. This also helps 'fill' a resume that needs to fill out a page. Do not forget margins, spacing and
consistency among the elements. |
|
| 7 |
Check spelling, grammar, and accuracy of provided information. |
|
| 8 |
Do not place the date on your resume in a fixed format.
Word processors can automatically place the current date on a resume if you need it. |
|
| 9 |
Be clear and concise. Resume length is an often debated subject. Typically for very experienced individuals resumes are
2 to 3 pages. At 3 pages, some information may become unnecessary. Keep this in mind when laying out the content of the
resume. Put the least important information at the end. |

Post your resume online at a site that allows various formats. ResumeBank.info
allows resumes in any format. Keep in mind all formats are not compatible with all sites search engines.
This will allow you to use the same resume for online, print, and email. It also eliminates errors caused by multiple versions. |

When printing your resume, use high brightness, 16 to 24 pound paper. Use a good quality ink jet or laser printer. Do not hand
out resumes in binders or folders. Never use non-standard paper sizes or colors. If your resume is multiple pages consider using a paper
clip rather than stapling the pages together. A paper clip allows scanning of resume without damaging the original. There
is a risk of your pages becoming separated so always place your name, address, and page number on all pages. |
